How a chance encounter with a green skoolie turned into one of those days we'll be talking about for a long time.

After celebrating their wedding back home in Michigan, Nikki and Sawyer packed up their skoolie and hit the road for a months-long honeymoon across the country with their rescue cat, Nash.

Their plan was simple: explore new places, take the scenic route, and make as many memories together as they could along the way.

One of those stops just happened to be Laredo.
Looking back, we're really glad our paths crossed when they did.

How This All Came Together

We met Nikki and Sawyer completely by accident.

The afternoon before, we were location scouting around Lake Casa Blanca when a green school bus caught our eye.

Naturally, we had questions.

Who were these people?
Where were they headed?
What's the story behind the bus?

So we did what any curious person would do. We found them on Instagram.

We sent them a message with a few recommendations for things to do while they were in Laredo. We figured that would probably be the end of it, but one conversation turned into another, and before we knew it, we were making plans to meet back up before sunrise the next morning.

Sometimes that's just how these things happen.

Meeting Up for a Sunrise Paddle on the Lake

When we pulled into the campground the next morning, we could already see them starting the morning inside their bus, Willy. (Yes, the bus has a name.)

We went in with a loose plan for the morning, but beyond the big pieces, we wanted to leave room for whatever sounded fun in the moment.

Looking back, that's probably why the day felt so much like them.

The air was still cool, the park was quiet, and the sun was just starting to come up as we made the short walk down to the lake.

We'd packed a couple of walkie-talkies with us, mostly so we wouldn't have to yell across the water once they paddled out. It's one of those little things that nobody really thinks about beforehand, but it meant we could guide them without interrupting the quiet morning around us.

A few minutes later, they pushed off the lakeshore.

We stayed back for a bit, watching the two of them slowly paddle farther out across the lake.

One of our favorite parts of photographing mornings like this is that it leaves room for surprises. And Lake Casa Blanca definitely had one waiting for us.

As the sun started coming up, a huge flock of birds lifted off from one of the islands near the middle of the lake.

It happened so fast that all four of us just kind of stopped for a second to take it in.

We hopped back in the car and drove over to the fishing dock to catch a different angle.

By the time we got there, the sky had shifted into the softest shades of pink that wrapped around Nikki and Sawyer as they paddled across the water together.

Breakfast With Nash & the Stories That Shaped Their Film

Back at the campsite, Nash was waiting for us.

Well… mostly waiting for Nikki and Sawyer.

He made a few laps around everyone's feet while they pulled out breakfast and started making coffee like this was any other morning.

After breakfast, we carried our coffees outside, settled into their hammock chairs, and started talking about how they got here.

Not just to Laredo, but to this version of life.

Honestly, we could've talked with them for hours.

We found out that it was Sawyer’s idea to quit their jobs, buy a school bus, and build it into a home they could live in while they spent months traveling the country together.

They told us about some of their favorite adventures together. And how one rainy night they found themselves flying down the slide of an abandoned waterpark because, well… porque no?

And how a text message from Nikki was how they really hit it off. And now those same words “Meet me by the fountain” have ended up engraved inside Sawyer’s wedding band.

A few days later, when Nikki and Sawyer shared old phone videos from that night, the waterpark, and all of the other adventures they’d been on, they didn't feel like bonus footage.

They felt like missing pieces of the story.

And getting to weave those memories into their film made it feel even more like them.

By the time we all finished our coffees, it felt like we'd known them for a lot longer than a morning. Which made what came next feel even more special.

Sharing Vows Under a Huisache’s Blooms

Eventually, it was time to get ready. They took turns getting dressed inside Willy while the other hung out with Nash outside.

Once they were both ready, we made the short walk over to a little spot they'd found a few days earlier by the picnic area.

Off to the side was a blooming huisache covered in tiny yellow flowers — Nikki's favorite color. The second they saw it, they knew that's where they wanted to share their vows.

Standing there, all we could think about were the stories they'd shared with us over breakfast.

The fountain.
The school bus.
The abandoned waterpark.

At one point, Nikki smiled and promised to keep filling their lives with laughter and dreaming up new adventures together.

We couldn't help but smile. That promise felt like it had already been quietly unfolding for years.

A little later, Sawyer looked at her and said that life with her had been the greatest adventure he'd ever been on.

If you'd only met them five minutes earlier, it would've sounded like a really sweet line.
But after spending the whole morning with them, it sounded true.

There were tears. There was laughter through the tears. A couple of moments where one of them had to stop for a second before finding their place again.

When they finished, neither of them seemed ready to move on just yet.

So instead of packing everything up, we pulled out a speaker, played their song (Hideaway by Brett Eldredge) so they could share a first dance beneath the yellow flowers.

We wandered around the little picnic area for a while, letting Nikki and Sawyer soak it all in.

Every now and then one of them would start laughing, the other would follow, and we'd just quietly keep documenting whatever unfolded.

One More Adventure Before Hitting the Road.

Eventually we made our way back toward their campsite.

We took a few more photos around Willy. It only felt right to spend a little more time with the place that had carried them through so many adventures already.

Before long, Sawyer rolled their Vespa down the ramp on the back of the bus. It was too fun not to use.

They zipped around the park together for a while, laughing the whole time, and honestly… it felt so fitting. These two are always looking for one more little adventure.

Then it was really time to pack everything up.

The paddleboards were strapped back down.
The Vespa got placed into a rack on the back of their skoolie.
And then, just like that, they were ready to hit the road again. Their next stop was South Padre Island.

We said our goodbyes, gave each other hugs, and watched as Willy disappeared around the bend.

The Kind of Day That Sticks With You

We've thought a lot about Nikki and Sawyer's day since then.

Not because it was packed with big, over-the-top moments. Honestly, it was kind of the opposite. And somehow, that's exactly what made it unforgettable.

It wasn't trying to be anything other than a day that felt like them.

Nikki later told us one of her favorite parts was that we were all just down for whatever idea came next.

Your wedding day doesn't have to look like anyone else's.

Maybe it starts on a paddleboard.
Maybe it starts with breakfast in a cute bnb.
Maybe it starts on the front porch with your dog curled up beside you while you drink your morning cafecito.

Whatever it looks like, we hope it feels like you. Because years from now, all those “this is us” moments are what you'll end up remembering the most.
